General Fireproofing Company

The General Fireproofing Company was founded in 1902 in Youngstown, Ohio, where it was best known for creating steel based office furniture.  Their most noted creation was a standardized steel desk which could be constructed on an assembly line; by the 1950′s, GF was one of the largest manufacturers of steel desks in the entire world. During World War II the company converted to making aircraft parts, instead of its well-known office furniture – once the war ended the plant resumed making various pieces of office furniture until the company declared bankruptcy in 1989.
